I thought the articles Lesley handed out were interesting, as they give you an idea of how Sandrich’s shows were received and interpreted in their time. I decided to post another article I found in the New York Times about Grant Tinker, co-founder of MTM, starting a new production company, GTG Entertainment, in 1987.
There is a part in the beginning where they describe a meeting between Tinker and Jay Sandrich, where Sandrich unsuccessfully pitches a show. And the article also mentions Steven Bocho, who we’ve talked about before in class. He talks about the creative freedom he found as a writer at MTM.
I also thought it was interesting that the two shows they mention being in production at GTG, “Encore,” and “The Johnsons Are Home,” don’t seem to have been successful at all, unlike the Mary Tyler Moore and Bob Newhart shows.
